What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any problem affecting your teeth, gums, or mouth that involves severe pain, bleeding, swelling, infection, or trauma and needs prompt professional attention to relieve discomfort or save a tooth. If you’re not sure whether your situation qualifies, use a simple rule of thumb: if it hurts badly, won’t stop bleeding, is swelling, or a tooth has been damaged or knocked out, treat it as an emergency and call us.

Situations that usually need urgent dental care include:

  • A severe or persistent toothache
  • A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
  • A broken, cracked, or chipped tooth
  • A lost or loose crown, filling, or bridge
  • A dental abscess or swelling around a tooth or in the gums
  • Bleeding that won’t stop after an injury
  • A soft-tissue injury to the lips, cheeks, tongue, or gums

Dental emergency or the ER — how to tell

Most dental problems are best handled by a dentist, not a hospital emergency room. An ER can manage pain and prescribe antibiotics, but it usually can’t repair, restore, or save a tooth. Call a dentist for toothaches, broken or knocked-out teeth, lost crowns or fillings, and most abscesses.

Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if you have:

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling that is spreading toward your eye or down your neck
  • Bleeding that you can’t control
  • A possible broken or dislocated jaw, or a serious facial injury

When in doubt about a life-threatening situation, choose the ER first — we can always handle the dental repair afterward.

Dental Emergencies We Treat

Park Smiles is a multi-specialty practice with general dentists, endodontic (root canal) care, oral surgery, and periodontal care all under one roof, so most emergencies can be diagnosed and treated in a single visit. These are the problems we see most often.

Severe Toothache

A toothache that is sharp, throbbing, or constant often signals decay, infection, or a cracked tooth that has reached the nerve. We’ll examine the tooth, take any X-rays needed to find the cause, and treat the source of the pain — which may mean a filling, root canal therapy, or other care. Don’t ignore a toothache that keeps you up at night; the sooner we see it, the more options we have to save the tooth.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

A broken or chipped tooth can range from a minor cosmetic chip to a serious fracture that exposes the nerve. Depending on the damage, we may repair it with dental bonding, a same-day CEREC crown, or other restorative treatment. Save any pieces you can and bring them with you.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A fully knocked-out (avulsed) permanent tooth is one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies. The tooth has the best chance of being saved if it’s reinserted within about 30 to 60 minutes, so call us immediately and follow the first-aid steps below on your way in.

Lost or Loose Crown

When a crown comes off or feels loose, the tooth underneath is exposed and often sensitive to air, temperature, and pressure. Keep the crown if you can find it, avoid chewing on that side, and call us so we can re-cement or replace it before the tooth is damaged further.

Lost Filling

A filling that falls out leaves a gap where decay and bacteria can collect, and the exposed area can be painful. We’ll clean the tooth and place a new filling — or, if the decay is extensive, recommend the right restoration to protect it.

Dental Abscess or Swelling

An abscess is a pocket of infection, usually causing throbbing pain, swelling, a bad taste, or a small bump on the gum. A dental infection won’t clear up on its own and can spread, so it needs prompt treatment. Call us right away — and if the swelling spreads toward your eye or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the ER.

We also handle cracked teeth, broken or lost dentures, soft-tissue injuries, and emergency tooth extractions and facial trauma care when they’re needed.

What to Do Before You Get to Us

The right first aid can ease your pain and improve the odds of saving a tooth. Here’s what to do for the most common emergencies while you’re on your way to Park Smiles.

Knocked-out tooth

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part) — never touch the root.
  • If it’s dirty, rinse it gently with water or milk; don’t scrub it.
  • If you can, place it back in the socket and bite down softly on clean gauze.
  • If you can’t reinsert it, keep it in a cup of milk (not water).
  • Get to us as quickly as possible — ideally within 30 to 60 minutes.

Broken or chipped tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any pieces.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Cover a sharp edge with dental wax or sugarless gum to protect your tongue and cheek.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed.

Lost crown or filling

  • Keep the crown and bring it with you.
  • Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.
  • You can use temporary dental cement from a pharmacy to cover the area — never use household glue.

Severe toothache

  • Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss to remove any trapped food.
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek for swelling.
  • Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed; never place aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue.

Abscess or swelling

  • Rinse with warm salt water a few times a day.
  • Do not try to pop or drain it yourself.
  • Call us promptly — and seek emergency medical care if swelling affects your breathing, swallowing, or vision.

These steps are temporary measures, not a substitute for professional care. For any life-threatening symptoms, call 911.

Emergency Dentist NYC — Frequently Asked Questions

A dental emergency is any problem involving severe pain, bleeding, swelling, infection, or trauma to your teeth, gums, or mouth that needs prompt care. Common examples include a severe toothache, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a lost crown or filling, and a dental abscess.

For most dental problems — toothaches, broken or knocked-out teeth, lost crowns or fillings, and abscesses — a dentist is the right choice, because an ER usually can’t repair or save a tooth. Go to the ER or call 911 if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly spreading swelling, or a possible broken jaw.

Pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently, and try to place it back in the socket. If you can’t, keep it in a cup of milk and get to a dentist as quickly as possible — ideally within 30 to 60 minutes, which gives the tooth the best chance of being saved.

Yes. You don’t need dental insurance to be treated at Park Smiles. We offer flexible financing options and will explain your costs clearly before any treatment, so you can focus on getting out of pain.

Rinse your mouth with warm water, save any broken pieces, and use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling. If a sharp edge is irritating your tongue or cheek, cover it with dental wax, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed.

Rinse with warm salt water, gently floss to remove any trapped food, and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed. A cold compress on the outside of your cheek can help with swelling. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, and call us first thing to be seen.

Yes. At locations equipped with CEREC technology, we can design and place a custom crown in a single visit, so a badly broken tooth can often be restored the same day rather than over multiple appointments.

The cost depends on what’s causing your emergency and the treatment you need — a simple filling costs far less than a root canal or extraction, for example. We’ll diagnose the problem, explain your options, and give you a clear estimate before starting, and we accept most PPO plans and offer financing.
