Want straighter teeth without anyone noticing braces? Lingual braces are fixed to the back of your teeth, facing your tongue, so they can’t be seen when you talk or smile. They move teeth the same way traditional braces do. The only difference is where the brackets sit.
Park Smiles offers lingual braces at our Carnegie Hill office at 1175 Park Avenue on the Upper East Side. It is the only Park Smiles office that provides this treatment. Our orthodontist sees patients at Carnegie Hill on Mondays and Wednesdays, and the same team handles your consultation, fitting and adjustment visits.
Lingual braces use metal brackets and wires, like traditional braces. The difference is that they are bonded to the inner surface of your teeth. Each bracket is made to fit the shape of your teeth from a 3D digital scan, so the appliance sits close to the tooth and feels more comfortable.
Because the brackets stay on all day and night, they work continuously. You never have to remember to wear them, and nothing is visible from the front.

Clear aligners such as Invisalign are nearly invisible too, but you take them out to eat and drink, and they only work while you’re wearing them. Lingual braces are fixed in place and work around the clock. Traditional metal and ceramic braces sit on the front of the teeth where people can see them. Lingual braces put all of the hardware behind the teeth.
That makes them a good fit for adults and teens who want fixed braces without visible hardware, and for patients whose bite needs more control than aligners can give.
Treatment starts with a consultation at Carnegie Hill. Our orthodontist examines your teeth and bite, takes digital scans and X-rays, and tells you whether lingual braces suit your case or whether another option would work better.
If you go ahead, your custom brackets are made from your scans and bonded to the back of your teeth at a follow-up visit. After that, you come back regularly for adjustments. Many cases take around 18 to 24 months, depending on how much your teeth need to move.
Most patients need a week or two to get used to the brackets. Your tongue may feel them at first, and some words can sound a little different. This usually settles quickly with normal talking.
Cleaning behind the teeth takes more care. Our team will show you how to brush and floss around the brackets and recommend tools that make it easier. Regular cleanings at our Park Avenue office help keep your teeth and gums healthy during treatment.
Lingual braces treat the same problems as traditional braces, including crowded teeth, gaps, overbites, underbites and crossbites. Our orthodontist will tell you at your consultation whether your case is a good fit.
The Carnegie Hill office accepts PPO dental insurance. Orthodontic coverage depends on your plan, and our team checks your benefits and explains your costs before treatment begins. Financing is available.
