Your child’s first dental visit should happen by their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. That is the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. At Park Smiles NYC Pediatrics in Carnegie Hill, the first visit is a short, gentle exam with pediatric dentists Dr. Jessica Brezel Kaplan and Dr. Dascher Branch-Elliman. It includes a cleaning and fluoride when your child is ready, and a home-care plan for you.

When to Schedule Your Child’s First Dental Visit

The first visit should come early, before any problem appears. What happens at the visit depends on your child’s age.

Child’s ageWhat the visit focuses on
First tooth to 12 monthsLap exam, teething, feeding and bottle habits, fluoride guidance
1 to 3 yearsExam, gentle cleaning, fluoride varnish, brushing coaching for parents
3 to 6 yearsExam, cleaning, X-rays when needed, cavity risk check
6 years and upFirst permanent molars, sealant planning, orthodontic check by age 7

Children who are past their first birthday can still start at any age. The team adapts the first visit to your child’s stage.

What Happens at the First Visit

The first visit usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. It follows five steps:

  1. Welcome and history. You share your child’s medical history, feeding habits and any concerns.
  2. Gentle exam. For infants and toddlers, the exam happens knee-to-knee, with your child’s head resting in the dentist’s lap and their body on yours.
  3. Cleaning and fluoride. Teeth are cleaned and fluoride varnish is painted on when your child is ready.
  4. Development screening. The dentist checks for early decay, bite development, tongue-ties and lip-ties, and signs of mouth breathing.
  5. Your home-care plan. You leave with clear guidance on brushing, toothpaste amount, snacks, bottles and pacifiers.

Screening That Goes Beyond Cavities

Park Smiles pediatric exams look at how your child breathes, swallows and feeds, not only at their teeth. A tongue-tie can affect feeding and speech. Chronic mouth breathing, snoring or a narrow palate can point to an airway problem that affects sleep and growth. Finding these early allows gentle, growth-friendly treatment.

How to Prepare Your Child for the First Visit

  • Book a morning visit when young children are rested.
  • Talk about it positively. Read a picture book about the dentist and avoid words like “hurt” or “shot.”
  • Bring a comfort item, such as a favorite toy or blanket.
  • Bring your questions about teething, thumb-sucking, pacifiers or feeding.
  • Bring insurance information and your child’s medication list.

What Comes After the First Visit

Most children return every six months for a checkup, cleaning and fluoride. Children at higher risk of cavities may need fluoride every three months. Around age 6, when the first permanent molars come in, the dentist discusses sealants and fluoride to protect them.

First Visit Cost and Insurance

Park Smiles NYC works with most major dental insurance providers. Most plans cover children’s preventive visits, including exams, cleanings and fluoride, twice a year. Ask about the current new-patient offer when you book.

First Dental Visit FAQs

When should my baby first see a dentist?

By the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing, whichever comes first. This follows the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry guideline.

No. Children can start dental care at any age. The team adapts the first visit to your child’s age and comfort level.

Yes. Parents stay with infants and toddlers, and the first exam is done with your child on your lap.

Usually not for babies and toddlers. X-rays are taken only when the dentist needs to see between teeth or check development, using low-dose digital imaging.

Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth and help children chew and speak. Untreated decay in baby teeth can cause pain, infection and damage to the permanent teeth underneath.

Yes, in the right amount. Children under 3 should use a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste. Children 3 to 6 should use a pea-sized amount. Fluoride varnish at the office is a small, safe dose.

Crying is normal for babies and toddlers and does not stop the exam. It even makes it easier to see the teeth. The team keeps the visit short and positive.
